Why should you care about girls halfway around the world?

Where there is poverty in the world, a girl is most vulnerable. When a girl is protected and empowered, her family and community thrive. When a girl’s family and community thrive, the world is changed.

She is at risk for dropping out of school early, sexual violence, forced child marriage, early pregnancy, complications during childbirth, and contracting HIV/AIDS. If she survives, she will raise her children in poverty and they, too, will face the same obstacles. And yet, girls have the potential to move themselves and their families into a healthier, more secure life. JLMC firmly believes that investing in the empowerment of adolescent girls means supporting the most powerful force for change on the planet.

Vivian Glyck founded Just Like My Child Foundation in 2006 following the birth of her son, Zak.

Through the experience of a mother’s love for her child, Vivian woke up to realize the value of every human life. After learning about the horrific numbers of children dying from malaria and orphaned by the AIDS epidemic in Africa, Vivian was moved to make a difference.

Vivian is a recognized thought leader in global issues facing the health, education, and economic leadership of vulnerable adolescent girls and women in East Africa. Just Like My Child Foundation has documented success in increasing acceptance of human rights in developing communities and shifting harmful cultural practices that impede girls from continuing their education. The organization is focused on the Girl Power Project® and committed to empowering vulnerable adolescent girls to stay in school, avoid forced child marriage, pregnancy, and gender-based violence. Through a Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action and in support of Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative, JLMC has directly and indirectly reached 20,000 girls in central Uganda.

An author and successful former marketing director for Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, and others, Vivian, a native New Yorker, currently lives in San Diego with her husband and son.

It only costs $100 to empower a girl with the tools she needs to transform her future.

JLMC’s Girl Power Project® was created to empower adolescent girls and designed to reduce barriers that prevent them from completing secondary school. The Girl Power Project addresses the complex needs of vulnerable adolescent girls’ aged 12-15, by empowering them with a network of support in their community to help them live healthy lives and equip them with the tools to protect themselves against forced child marriage, HIV transmission, early pregnancy, rape and disease.

As of 2019, the Girl Power Project® has directly reached over 6,000 girls at 96 primary schools in central Uganda. Scientific results show that Girl Power Project® participants are gaining more knowledge, life skills, and assets that strengthen their ability to successfully navigate adolescence.
